Bevis Gray, Director
A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
Music is a big part of our family. I have been playing the piano for over 18 years, my wife Tembi plays the saxophone as well as the piano and our daughter, Kierra play the drums, guitar, piano and loves to sing. I can remember when my wife and I first started GMG Music Center in March of 2003, we had a vision and a dream. Since then God has opened the doors to opportunities and has provided provisions to allow us to take GMG Music Center to another level in private music education and share the gift of music as a music teacher in
Richland School District One at Carolina School for Inquiry. Our mission is to help increase the musical atmosphere by raising up quality musicians.
GMG Music Center has a contemporary approach and stands apart form any other private music institution because of our unique music learning system, the GMG Music System. This system encourages learning through sight-reading, ear training, theory, music history, technique, transcription, arranging, composition, improvisation, production and performance.
Coming from humble beginnings and being from the small rural town of Mullins, South Carolina, I understand how important it is to have a positive outlet. I can remember growing up and my friends would be hanging out, but because I was so heavily involved in music my time was spent traveling with various music groups and playing at different churches. I am actually the first in my family to even be interested in music to this extent. Initially I wanted to play the saxophone, but my mom could not afford to buy me one. However, she was able to buy me a starter blue toy piano from the local department store. From there creativity took its course and till this day the story continues.
Nevertheless, had my artistic creativity not been nurtured by caring adults along the way, such as my mother, my late grandmother and Dwight McMillian (the former Director of Bands at Claflin University where my wife and I attended college), just to name a few, perhaps the world would have never met me as the person I am today, a professional musician, entrepreneur (
GMG Consulting Services), music educator, composer, arranger, producer, consultant, and music transcriber.
I have played the piano for many well known artists such as Vickie Winans, the Pace Sisters, Lashaun Pace, Dorthy Norwood, Twinkie Clark and have shared the stage with artists such as Vanessa Ruben, the Canton Spirituals, Willie Neal, the Gospel Keynotes, and Ramsey Lewis, but there is nothing I love more than imparting knowledge and cultivating artistic creativity into the lives of people both young and old.
I truly believe that the arts play an important role in a child's education and a persons overall development. I am a witness!
